Studios and tattoo artists may use different methods of communication, consultation, design development and booking, but the decisions still depend on one another in a logical order. When the project changes substantially, the size, placement, price, duration or the appointment itself often need to be reassessed.

Who is this guide for?

This guide is intended for people who:

want a tattoo but do not know what the next step is

have an idea and several references

are preparing their first enquiry

do not know whether to choose the artist, size or placement first

want to understand when a realistic price and time estimate is possible

are preparing to pay an appointment reservation

The complete sequence in one place

desire → clearer idea → priorities → references → artist selection → first enquiry → consultation → design development → size and placement → price and time estimate → booking terms → appointment

This is not a bureaucratic form or a mandatory policy for every studio. It is an overview of how the decisions depend on one another: later steps make more sense once the earlier ones have been clarified sufficiently.

1. Desire

You know that you want to get tattooed, but you do not yet need a fixed motif or a finished image. Desire is the beginning of the process, not a final instruction for execution.

2. A clearer idea

You clarify what you want to express, show or achieve with the tattoo. Desire is the initial intention, the idea is a clearer direction, a reference helps explain that direction, and the design is the specific visual solution.

3. Priorities

Define what is essential in the project, what is desirable, what may change and what you definitely do not want. Without that, it is difficult to judge what must be preserved when the initial concept needs to be adapted.

4. References

References can show atmosphere, style, composition, colours, pose or a detail. They should not serve as a demand to copy someone else’s entire tattoo.

A smaller number of explained references is more useful than a large folder of images without explanation.

5. Choosing an artist

Choose a tattoo artist according to the type of project, style, comparable and healed work, process and communication. Price, location, popularity and recommendations can be part of the decision, but none of these criteria is sufficient on its own.

6. The first enquiry

The first enquiry should contain enough information for the artist to assess whether the project fits their work, whether an additional consultation is needed and whether they can provide an initial estimate.

The method of contact depends on the studio’s rules. An enquiry may be sent through a form, message, email, phone or another agreed channel.

7. Consultation

During the consultation, priorities are aligned, feasibility is checked, technical limitations are explained and possible alternatives are considered.

A consultation is not an attempt to persuade the client to accept something they do not want, nor pressure on the artist to carry out something they do not consider professional and responsible.

8. Design development

The idea, motifs and references are turned into a specific solution adapted to the body, style and method of execution.

Artists do not necessarily show the final design at the same stage, and they do not all use the same workflow or allow the same number of revisions. This should be checked before booking.

9. Size and placement

Design, size and placement are developed together. A functional size depends on the smallest important detail, the required spacing and the style, while the placement must have the shape and surface area needed to hold such a design.

The design does not always have to be completely finished before size and placement are considered. These three elements are checked against one another throughout development.

10. Price and duration estimate

A more realistic estimate is possible once the motif, scope, style, size, placement, amount of detail, colour and possible number of appointments are sufficiently known.

An estimate is not always the same as an unchangeable final price. If the project changes substantially later, the price, duration and number of appointments need to be reassessed.

11. Booking terms

Before paying, you should understand what the reservation payment represents, whether it is deducted from the final price and what rules apply to rescheduling, cancellation, non-attendance or a substantial change to the project.

Studios do not necessarily have the same rules for retaining, transferring or refunding the amount paid. The rules should be clear before payment.

12. The appointment

The appointment is booked when both sides understand the project, expectations, approximate cost, required appointments and working rules clearly enough.

Booking does not mean that no detail can ever be changed. Major changes may nevertheless require a new estimate, another appointment or treatment of the request as a new project.

What should you include in the first enquiry?

Send:

a short description of the idea

the most important motifs

what is essential and what can be adapted

what you definitely do not want

several references with a brief explanation of each one

the approximate desired placement

an approximate desired size, while remaining open to professional correction

the colour direction or black-and-grey approach if it matters

a clear photograph of the relevant body area

existing tattoos or other visible features of the surface that affect placement

a genuine time-related reason, only if one exists

Unnecessary private or health information is not needed for a first enquiry. Relevant health circumstances should be disclosed when they matter for the safety of the procedure, according to the studio’s rules and with an appropriate professional assessment when necessary.

What is clarified during a consultation?

A consultation clarifies:

what matters most to the client

whether the project is feasible

what needs to be simplified, enlarged or positioned differently

the style and design direction

the relationship between design, size and placement

the approximate duration and number of appointments

whether the selected artist is the right choice

whether there are reasons to postpone or change the project

The client decides what they want to wear, what their priorities are and where their boundaries lie. The tattoo artist decides what they can execute professionally and responsibly.

When is a realistic estimate possible?

The question “How much does a tattoo like this cost?” often cannot be answered usefully until the following is known:

what is actually being made

in which style

at what functional size

on which placement

with how much detail and colour

over how many appointments

A budget is legitimate information and can help adjust the scope of a project. It cannot remove technical limitations or make a complex design work well at an insufficient size or on an unsuitable placement.

What must be clear before paying the reservation?

Before paying, you should know:

what the amount paid represents

whether it is deducted from the final price

the conditions for rescheduling and cancellation

what happens in the event of non-attendance

what happens if the studio reschedules the appointment

what happens if the project changes substantially

when and how the design is reviewed or edited under the specific artist’s rules

what you receive as confirmation of the booking

There is no single rule that applies to every studio. What matters is that you receive the rules of the specific studio before paying, not only after a problem occurs.

What can still change after booking?

Minor adjustments within the agreed direction

These may include adjustments to position, relationships between elements or details that do not change the basic nature of the project, depending on the artist’s workflow.

What counts as a minor adjustment depends on the agreed project and the rules of the specific artist.

Changes that alter the project

Changing the main motif, style, placement, size, colour or scope may require:

a new design

a new price and time estimate

a different number of appointments

a different date

a different artist

treating the request as a new project

Such a change does not have to be a problem, but it is no longer merely a small adjustment to the existing agreement.

A quick check before booking

Can I explain the basic idea clearly?

Do I know what matters most to me and what may be adapted?

Have I explained my references?

Am I choosing the artist according to the type of project I want?

Have we connected the size and placement with the actual needs of the design?

Do I know the approximate price, duration and number of appointments?

Do I understand the booking terms?

Do I know which changes may require a completely new estimate?

Related guides

From idea to tattoo appointment

Tattoo Guide

Who is tattooing you?

How to work with a tattoo artist on your project

Tattoo prices and pricing methods

Zoran Pocrnić – Žvaki, Anubis Tattoo / Osijek–Čepin

An appointment is the end of the preparation, not the moment when you first start thinking about the project.
